Our Story

Rus.nor.stain: said in a Sheffield dialect.

Portland Works, commissioned in 1876 and completed in 1879, is one of the last remaining examples of a purpose-built metal trades factory. It was here, in 1914, that Mosley’s became the first company to produce stainless steel cutlery, under the Rusnorstain name, in collaboration between Harry Brearley and Ernest Stuart. The cutlery became renowned worldwide, produced until the 1950s. Over the years, the factory employed hundreds of skilled artisans, creating thousands of tons of cutlery enjoyed everywhere from local fish-and-chip shops to high-end restaurants.

After years in the making, we’re bringing Rusnorstain back to its roots by reigniting the production of stainless steel knives and cutlery at Portland Works, where it all began. With our commitment to quality craftsmanship and training the next generation in the place that started it.

We have developed a range of high quality Kitchen knives and a brand new pattern of cutlery that reflects our design ethos with a nod to the past.

James, our lead craftsman, has over a decade of experience in metalwork, blacksmithing, design, and production.

Rae has ten years plus in the RESTAURANT and events planning industry, plus a few more keeping us in check.
